Learning Objectives

- Describe the pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes.
- Evaluate options for glycemic control and identify principles for selecting, combining, and advancing therapies.
- Outline the current guideline recommendations for initiation and intensification of diabetic therapy.
- Define clinical inertia and formulate strategies to overcome it.
- List current recommendations for appropriate screening and testing of patients with diabetes.
- Identify patients not achieving treatment goals with first-line therapy and implement strategies for appropriate referral or therapy escalation.
- Develop and implement strategies that will help overcome barriers to diabetes care.
- Apply current guidelines and strategies in the treatment of patients with diabetes.
